Many home owners decide to take on a remodeling project in order to add their personality and style to their home. This reason takes on many form such as remodeling the kitchen to make it more useable, refinishing cabinets to match the walls, changing an aging entry door or a drafty window, and many more too numerous to mention. Regardless of the project, the decision to remodel meets one of two criteria (often, it addresses both): to replace a defective or failing element, or to create a style change. Most of the time, the decision to remodel addresses both elements. After all, if you have to replace that kitchen cabinet that won’t shut properly or that old out-dated vinyl flooring that is curling up at the edges, you might as well make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Home owners often find it helpful to maintain a list of possible changes and updates to their home. As time provides, the home owner can visit this list and identify opportune times to tackle a remodeling project. For instance, if your flooring dealer is offering special prices or financing options on that new granite tile that you have had your eye on, now may be a good time to make the purchase and tackle the project. Always prioritize your list with must-fix items at the top. Don’t let the leaky faucet take a back seat to your new hardwood flooring project. Fixing the defective elements in your home prevent further damage down the road and can help you to close in on the stylistic changes to your home without fear of a nuisance repair problem. Remodeling projects are important to maintaining the functionality and value of your home. Sadly, many home owners do not tackle remodeling projects until they are seeking to sell their home or refinance. These are often bad times for a remodeling project. When selling a home, most owners seek to do only minimal work that will meet the minimum needs. The tag line, “new cabinets and windows” on a realtor’s website or flyer doesn’t necessarily mean that the home has quality materials. Prospective buyers are likely to shun homes with such statements if the “new” product doesn’t meet their expectations. The best time to tackle a remodeling project is when one plans to remain in the home for a period of time and the project is designed to update or enhance functionality of the home. Here, the home owner has the ability to take time and concentrate focus on the project without a timeline or deadline that inhibits quality work and successful completion. Time and patience is the key to a successful remodeling project.
