When you need to create a finished edge, dress up a room,
or add a functional and decorative element to your home, various types of
moldings have been designed to meet your needs. Here are some basic types
of moldings and their uses.
1. Cove: This molding is primarily used in
remodeling projects. Whenever you are replacing paneling or re-finishing
drywall, this piece of trim helps to cover an unfinished edge without taking
up a large amount of wall space. Installed primarily at the ceiling, this
trim is used whenever there is a low ceiling or little space for installing
molding.
2. Baseboard: Baseboard is used at the
base of the floor and installed on the wall. Baseboard is used to dress up
the edge of your flooring or to allow for the expansion of a floating floor
system. Basic home design and the general trend in remodeling projects is
to install baseboard. Available in many sizes and profiles, baseboard is
one of the easiest ways to add design and style to your home.
3. Shoe: This molding is also used at the
base of the floor and installed on the wall. It is used to dress up the
edge of your flooring and to allow for expansion of hardwood and floating
floor installations. Small in size, this piece provides similar remodeling
opportunities as the cove, only on the floor.
4. Casing: Casing primarily surrounds
doors and windows and is used to provide a clean line and transition between
the jamb of the door or window and the wall. Like the baseboard, casing is
almost always used in new construction and remodeling projects. Available
in countless sizes and styles, casing is often one of the most difficult
design choices in a trim project.
5. Corner: Whenever a corner is exposed, a
corner molding is used. This provides both design and protection for the
wall. Outside corners are very prominent and should be used sparingly.
6. Crown: A very decorative trim for your
ceiling or cabinets, crown provides elegance and can help to elevate the
ceiling in a room. New design trends in remodeling and construction have
been incorporating more and more crown. Often the most expensive version of
trim, it is important take care in making this decision.
