Older homes and smaller new construction houses generally are designed with a linear kitchen. This type of kitchen is designed to maximize usage in a small space. Generally, these types of kitchens allow for the placement of a dining room table, a set of chairs, and not much else. When remodeling this type of kitchen or seeking to improve its functionality, make sure that there is still adequate access to the cabinets. Linear kitchens can be beautifully maximized. One common technique involves locating the sink and sink base cabinets to one side of the countertop. Here, you can place the dishwasher and create an efficient plumbing configuration in the kitchen. Additionally, this allows for more countertop space, giving the kitchen the illusion of a larger area. Opening up the countertop allows for placement of other kitchen appliances. Centering the range is also a common method of making a linear kitchen more efficient. This helps to maintain a positive traffic flow between cooking and other forms of food preparation. Locating the refrigeration on an opposing wall will allow for these types of kitchens to maximize their usefulness. Many people are tempted to add dramatic design elements to the doors of their cabinets. Choose a basic or traditional panel style that incorporates a simple border. Avoid panel designs that are eccentrically raised as these types of doors are designed for large kitchens and tend to stand out in a linear kitchen. Without any room for elements that break up the pattern, sleek and simple lines will allow your kitchen to accent your home and provide beautiful functionality.
