Once you’ve made the decision to tackle a bathroom
remodeling project, it is important to take your time and evaluate all the
options prior to beginning the project. Remodeling can be a costly process
that can take up a good deal of your time. In older homes, remodeling almost
always contains surprises that can only be uncovered once the project is
underway, adding to the stress of remodeling. Use these steps to help
simplify your project and, hopefully lessen the headaches that can accompany
any remodeling project.
Take Detailed Measurements
Measure the room by measuring each wall and recording it on a piece of
paper. This measurement will give you available space for bathroom fixtures,
accessories, bath tub/shower, etc. Additionally, you can easily calculate
the square feet of the room if you plan on replacing the flooring.
Measure the size of the tub/shower. Usually, it is best to keep the same
size tub/shower when remodeling your bathroom. Water supply and drainage
changes are usually very costly. If you are planning to replace the tub or
shower during your bathroom remodeling project, using these measurements can
help you minimize the plumbing costs that can accompany a tub or shower
change.
Take note of plumbing and electrical locations. For the same reasons for
measuring the tub/shower, this allows you to coordinate all of the items of
your bathroom remodeling project in the most cost-effective way possible.
Measure the height and width of doors and door opening. If you plan on
replacing the flooring in your bathroom, you will need to know the height of
the door in order to select flooring that doesn’t require shortening the
door height. Additionally, if you plan on adding additional cabinets or
larger cabinets in the bathroom, the amount of space that the door occupies
is a key factor in selecting the cabinet.
Choose What Elements You Will Be Keeping
Decide whether you are keeping or replacing the tub/shower, cabinets,
toilet, vanity, or medicine cabinet. Identifying which elements of your
bathroom remodeling project that you plan to keep early on will help you to
focus items that can compliment the existing features of your bathroom.
Make sure that the item you are keeping is in good working condition. If the
item is in disrepair or is aging, it may be necessary to replace the item.
Older toilets, cabinets, or other bathroom fixtures can decrease the
appearance of your bathroom if they are not replaced.
